Blackout Shades

Blackout shades in Boise and Meridian.

Shades that genuinely darken a room — for bedrooms, nurseries, and media rooms. Measured and installed by our own team. Free in-home estimate anywhere in the Treasure Valley.

True Blackout

What actually makes a shade blackout.

Two things decide whether a room actually goes dark, and only one of them is the fabric. A true blackout fabric blocks essentially all light through the material itself — that part is straightforward. The part people are surprised by is the gap: every shade that rolls or stacks inside a window frame leaves a small space at the sides, and daylight comes through it. That is why a shade can be labeled blackout and still leave a bright outline around the window at six in the morning. We measure for that up front, talk through inside versus outside mount, and tell you honestly what a given window can and cannot achieve before you order anything.

Where the light actually gets in.

Fabric is the easy part. These are the pieces that decide how dark the room really gets.

Blackout Roller

A single flat panel of opaque fabric on a roller. The simplest way to get a dark room, the cleanest look, and usually the least expensive route to true blackout.

Blackout Cellular

Honeycomb cells with a blackout liner. Darkens the room and adds real insulation at the same time — worth it on a bedroom window that bakes in July or chills in January.

The Light Gap

The reason a blackout shade can still leave a bright outline. An inside mount sits within the frame and leaves a small gap at each side; an outside mount covers past the opening and closes most of it.

Side Channels

Tracks fitted down both sides of the window that the shade runs inside, sealing the edge. This is what gets a room genuinely dark rather than nearly dark — the usual answer for a nursery or a media room.

How It Works

From estimate to a shade that fits right.

1. In-home estimate

We bring fabric and color samples to your home and talk through light control, mount style, and control options in the actual light of the room.

2. Measured individually

Every window gets measured on-site — no stock sizing. Inside-mount and outside-mount are both fit to the exact opening.

3. Installed by us

Our installer has been in this trade for nearly thirty years. The same people who measured your windows are accountable for how they fit.

Which One Is Right For You

Shades vs. blinds vs. shutters.

Shades give you soft, layered light control and a wide range of fabrics, colors, and openness levels — a great fit when you want the room to feel warm rather than utilitarian. If durability and budget matter more than fabric texture, our blinds may be the better fit. For a permanent, built-in feature that adds resale value, take a look at our plantation shutters. We are happy to bring samples of all three so you can compare them side by side in your own home.

What To Expect

Lead times, motorization, and lift styles.

Every shade is made to order for your exact window — here is what shapes the timeline and the choice of lift.

Typical Lead Time

Shades are manufactured after we measure, so expect a production window before install day. Simpler light-filtering and roller fabrics generally move faster than motorized or specialty fabrics like zebra and roman. We'll confirm a firm date at your in-home estimate.

Motorized Shades

Battery or wired motorization is available across our shade lines — useful for tall or hard-to-reach windows, stairwells, and anywhere you want a remote or smart-home control instead of a cord. It costs more than a standard cordless lift but removes cords entirely, which matters most with kids or pets in the house.

Top-Down/Bottom-Up

Lower the top of the shade for privacy while still letting light in from below, or raise the bottom for a view without losing privacy up top. Popular on cellular and light-filtering shades in bathrooms, bedrooms, and any window that faces a street or neighbor.

Common Questions

Blackout shade questions we hear most.

How much do blackout shades cost?

Cost depends on fabric, size, and lift style — a blackout roller shade costs less than a motorized blackout cellular with side channels. We give you an exact, itemized quote at your free in-home estimate, with samples in hand so you can see the fabric in your own light.

What's the difference between blackout and room darkening?

The terms get used loosely, and the difference matters. A blackout fabric blocks essentially all light through the material. A room-darkening fabric cuts most of it but still lets a soft glow through — fine for a living room, not enough for someone who works nights. We will tell you which one a window actually needs rather than selling you up.

Will a blackout shade make my bedroom completely dark?

Close to it, and genuinely dark if the window allows side channels. The fabric is rarely the limit — the light gap at the edges is. An outside mount closes most of it; side channels close nearly all of it. Some windows cannot take channels, and when that is the case we will say so before you order rather than after.

Who You’re Calling

Hi, we’re Troy & Angela.

Between us, thirty years in the Treasure Valley — in and out of Valley homes. Angela grew up in her family’s shutter plant and opened her own here in Idaho in 2020.
