What we install in Garden City

A town with an unusual history, and unusual buildings to match.

Garden City takes its name from the Chinese market gardens that grew strawberries and onions along the river here in the 1890s — the same gardens that gave Chinden Boulevard its name. The city incorporated in 1949, after Boise banned gambling and a group of businessmen decided they would rather not. The halls along Chinden brought restaurants, bars and a wave of quick employee housing with them. Gambling ended statewide in 1954; the buildings stayed.

What that leaves, seventy-five years later, is a town where a 1950s cottage, a converted shop and a new riverfront build can sit on the same block.

Three different jobs, sometimes on one street.

The older cottages and small post-war houses have modest openings, shallow jambs and the occasional window that was replaced once, badly, in 1985. Outside mount is often the honest answer.

The newer riverfront and greenbelt-adjacent homes are the opposite — tall glass oriented at the water, where the whole point is the view and the problem is afternoon west light. Solar shades, every time.

And then there is the live-work and studio stock around the arts district, which has the biggest and least standard windows in the valley: old industrial openings, storefront glass, ceilings high enough that nothing off a shelf reaches. Those are our favorite ones. They need a real measurement, a real conversation about how the space gets used, and often motorization simply because of the reach.

Small jobs welcome.

A lot of Garden City work is one window or two — a studio that needs blackout for the way the light falls, a shop front that bakes in the afternoon. We take one-window jobs — no job is too small for us. Not every company can say that, and nobody should have to pretend they need a whole house done just to get a straight answer.

A million visits a year land on one corner of this town

Garden City is small, and the north side of it is where the whole valley goes.

Expo Idaho sits on 240 acres at Glenwood and Chinden — the site took that name in 2005, but the fairgrounds have been there since 1967. The Western Idaho Fair runs every August and began life in 1897 as the Intermountain Fair, which makes it very close to 130 years old and one of the longest-running events in the state. More than 250,000 people come to the fair each year, and roughly another 750,000 visit the grounds for everything else. That is about a million visits a year, to one corner of a city most people drive through without noticing.

And it just got busier. The Stadium at Expo Idaho — Idaho’s first professional soccer stadium, 7,225 seats — was finished in March 2026, and Athletic Club Boise played its first USL League One season there this year. The club moves up to the USL Championship, the second tier of American soccer, in 2027.

Two blocks of that same ground is Memorial Stadium, built in 1989, where the Boise Hawks have played independent professional baseball in the Pioneer League for decades.

What all that means at a window

It is pleasant to live near, and it has two practical consequences we deal with constantly on this side of town.

Summer evenings are bright and busy. August is fair month, the soccer and baseball seasons run right through the warm half of the year, and the lights, the traffic and the car headlights swinging into driveways all come after dark. For a bedroom on the north side of Garden City, room-darkening or blackout is not a luxury — it is the difference between sleeping through an event night and not. The same fix as a west-facing bedroom, for a completely different reason.

And a new stadium pulls building with it. Townhomes and live-work builds were already going up along the river here; a second professional venue does not slow that down. New construction arrives with builder-grade blinds or bare glass, and the right time to measure is before the furniture goes in.

If you are near Glenwood and Chinden and the light at night is the thing bothering you, say so when we measure. It changes the recommendation in that room and almost nowhere else in the house.
