Cascade’s year-round population is 1,005. It has 829 housing units, and 43.8 percent of them are vacant on any given count.
Do the arithmetic and the town makes sense: this is a small, real, year-round community — the seat of Valley County, with a courthouse and a school and people who plow their own driveways in January — wrapped in several hundred cabins and lake houses that fill up for a few months and go quiet for the rest.
Both of those are our customers, and they are not asking for the same thing.
The year-round house wants a window covering that holds heat through a long winter at 4,869 feet and still looks right in a room somebody actually lives in. The cabin wants something that protects the floors and the furniture while nobody is there, that a renter or a relative can operate without instructions, and that does not need the owner standing in the driveway to let anybody in.
Cascade Dam was finished in 1948, and the reservoir behind it is the reason the town is still here. For the next half-century, though, the paycheck came from timber: the sawmill was the economy.
The mill closed in May 2001. A town of this size does not absorb that quietly. What happened next is that the water finished the job the dam started — the reservoir was renamed "Lake Cascade" around 2004, part of a deliberate push to be read as a destination rather than a piece of irrigation infrastructure.
It worked. Today the lake is what brings people up Highway 55, and a good share of the housing stock exists because of it.
Why any of that belongs on a page about blinds: the housing here came in two distinct eras. Mill-era houses in town, and lake-era houses built for the view. Older frames and odd openings in one, big glass and tall walls in the other. We measure both.

Long, cold, snowy winters; short, warm, dry summers. That is the climate in a sentence, and at nearly 4,900 feet the winter half of it is the half that matters at a window.
Cold glass is an expensive surface. Glass has effectively no insulating value compared with the wall around it, so on a January night the window is where the heat goes. A cellular shade traps air in its pockets — the same principle a double-pane window uses — and that air is the insulation. In a mountain house that is not a comfort upgrade, it is a line on the power bill.
And in a cabin that sits at 55 degrees from November to April, there is a second reason to care: the warmer and drier you can keep the inside surface of a window, the less you are inviting condensation onto sills and frames that do not dry out until spring.
Then the summer flips the problem. High-altitude sun off open water fades floors, rugs and furniture in rooms nobody is sitting in. That is what shades on an empty house are actually for.
Beyond the valley the work runs mostly to faux wood blinds, roller shades and Roman shades, with cellular shades earning their place in a town like this one for the reason above. Exterior sun shades suit a covered deck facing the water.
Faux wood handles humidity and bright light without the warping real wood can show. Roller shades in a solar fabric cut glare and heat while leaving the lake visible — and if you bought a house here for a view, that matters more than any other single thing a shade does. Roman shades bring some softness to rooms that tend to be all hard surfaces and hard light.
Motorization is worth asking about specifically in Cascade. Tall lake-facing glass is hard to reach. A house you are not in is hard to manage. Both of those are solved problems, and the second one is the reason second-home owners ask.
Shutters look right in a Cascade home, old or new, and that is a question of personal style — not of what sort of house you own.
As for what is already hanging: in the older houses we find aluminum window frames, a lot of original older windows, and some genuinely old wood blinds. Aluminum conducts heat straight through, which is why those frames are cold to the touch in February and are usually the first place condensation shows. Older houses have settled, so the openings are rarely square — which is exactly why we measure every window ourselves rather than working from a plan or a photo.
