Nampa is Idaho’s second-largest city and one of the fastest-growing communities in Canyon County, with new subdivisions going in alongside long-established neighborhoods. What we install in Nampa

Old Nampa: Craftsman bungalows and mail-order houses.

The eighteen blocks just south of downtown — roughly between 4th Avenue South, 11th Avenue South, 4th Street South and 9th Street South — hold Nampa’s oldest housing. Many of those homes date from the 1900s through the 1920s, and around 164 had been built by the 1930s. Craftsman and Bungalow dominate, with Queen Anne, Colonial Revival and Tudor Revival mixed in. The neighborhood is on the National Register, and the city has been working toward a local historic district since 2022.

Here is the part that matters for window coverings: a lot of those houses came from mail-order kits. They were assembled on site, by hand, a century ago. Openings that were nominally identical are not identical now. We measure every window in a house like that individually, top, middle and bottom, and we expect to find a quarter inch of difference between them.

Anyone quoting an old Nampa house off a floor plan is guessing.

The newer half of town.

Just over half of Nampa’s homes were built in 2000 or later, out in the subdivisions north and west of the old core. Those are the square, repeatable, deep-jamb openings that take a clean inside mount, and the work goes quickly.

Nampa also has the highest share of renters of any city we work in — about three in ten homes. If you are a landlord covering a rental, the calculation is different from a forever home, and we will tell you honestly where the cheaper product is the right call. There is no sense putting a premium shutter in a unit that turns over every two years.

What we usually end up recommending.

In the old core, inside-mount is often off the table, so a well-fitted outside mount that covers the irregularity is both better looking and better performing. In the newer subdivisions it is the same conversation as anywhere in the valley: what is the window facing, and how hot does that room get in July.

What actually draws people to the south and west of town

Growth figures explain that Nampa is filling up. They do not explain why people pick this side of the valley. Two things do, and both sit south and west of the old core.

Lake Lowell is nearly 9,000 acres of water, and it is not going anywhere. It sits inside the Deer Flat National Wildlife Refuge, which President Theodore Roosevelt established in 1909 as a breeding ground for migratory birds — one of the oldest refuges in the country. The Lake Lowell unit alone runs to more than 10,500 acres. Boating season opens in the spring and runs into late September, and the rest of the year it is fishing, hunting and some of the best birding in Idaho, on the Pacific Flyway.

And RedHawk, in south Nampa — a public 18-hole course, par 71, a shade over 7,000 yards, with houses backing onto a good part of it.

Both of them change what a window on that side of town has to do

A refuge means the openness is permanent. This is the part worth thinking about before you buy a covering. If your house looks west or southwest toward Lake Lowell, nothing is ever going to be built between you and that horizon — it is federally protected ground. The afternoon sun you get today is the afternoon sun you will get in twenty years, and the view is equally permanent. That cuts both ways: it is the best argument we know for spending properly on a solar roller shade rather than something that merely blocks the glare, because you are solving a problem that will never change and you are protecting a view worth keeping.

Water adds the second half of it. Reflected light off nine thousand acres reaches into a room in ways direct sun does not — the underside of a sill, the back of a sofa, a ceiling. It is a real cause of fading in places people do not think to look.

A course-side house has a different problem entirely, and it is privacy, not heat. Golfers walk past ground-floor windows all day in season. The usual instinct is to shut the blinds and lose the view you paid for. The better answer is a top-down/bottom-up cellular shade: you lower it from the top, so you keep the sky and the fairway and nobody is looking into the room at eye level. We fit a lot of those along courses, and almost nobody asks for them by name.
