Caldwell’s Steunenberg Residential Historic District holds more than three hundred residential properties, most of them built between the 1910s and the 1930s, in everything from Queen Anne to Tudor Revival. Downtown adds a second historic district of commercial buildings put up between 1894 and 1911, listed on the National Register in 1982.
The detail that matters for us: the Steunenberg district has a design review committee that looks at proposed changes to keep buildings in keeping with their historic character. So how a window covering reads from the street is not only a matter of taste there — it can be a matter of approval.
We take that seriously. In the historic district we talk about the exterior line before we talk about fabric, we check what is visible from the sidewalk, and we will tell you if something is likely to raise a question before you have paid for it.
A 1920s Caldwell house has settled for a century. Openings are rarely square, jambs are often too shallow for a clean inside mount, and two windows that look identical from across the room will measure differently. Every one gets measured individually, top, middle and bottom. Anyone quoting a house like that off a floor plan is guessing.
Where inside mount is not honest, a well-fitted outside mount is usually both better looking and better performing — it covers the irregularity instead of advertising it.
North and east of the old town, Caldwell has some of the most active new-home building in Canyon County. Those homes are the straightforward version of this job: square, repeatable, quick to measure, quick to install.
If you are in a new Caldwell build, the same advice applies as anywhere — start with the great room and the primary bedroom, see how a summer goes, and finish the rest when you are ready.
Caldwell has two housing stories running at once, and they ask for different things at the window.
Out west of town, around TimberStone. The course carries a Caldwell address but sits well out in the farmland — eighteen holes, par 72, roughly 6,900 yards, public, designed by John Steidel. New construction has been going up around it, and those houses share a particular set of windows: large openings pointed at open ground, afternoon sun with nothing in the way, and the specific privacy question that comes with living on a course other people walk every day.
That last one matters more than people expect. A solar roller shade cuts the glare while you keep the fairway view, and a top-down/bottom-up cellular shade gives you privacy at eye level while the sky stays open. Both are better answers than closing the blinds on the reason you bought the lot.
And in the older neighborhoods near the College of Idaho, it is the opposite job. Houses with decades or a century on them have settled, so the openings are rarely square, and a stock-size blind leaves a wedge of daylight down one edge. Mid-century frames are often aluminum, which conducts — cold to the touch in February and usually the first place condensation shows. That is where an insulating covering does its most useful work.
We measure every window ourselves rather than working from a plan or a photograph, which is the only way to fit either half of this town properly.
