Motorized Shades & Blinds

Motorized shades in Boise and Meridian.

Shades and blinds that move on a remote, a wall switch, your phone, or a schedule — for tall windows, stairwells, and whole rooms you would rather not walk around. Measured, powered, and installed by our own team. Free in-home estimate anywhere in the Treasure Valley.

Why Motorize

What motorization actually solves.

Motorized shades are not a gadget, and we will not sell them to you as one. They earn their cost in three situations. The first is reach — a window over a stairwell, above a front door, or along a two-story great room wall that nobody is getting a pole to twice a day. The second is cords: a motor removes them completely, which is the honest answer in a house with small children or pets. The third is scale — once a room has five or six windows, moving them one at a time stops happening, and shades that never get used were a waste of money no matter what they cost. If none of those three describe your windows, a standard cordless lift is very likely the better buy, and we will tell you so at the estimate.

How It Works

Power, control, and what each one means.

Two decisions shape every motorized job: where the power comes from — battery, solar, or wired — and how you tell the shade to move.

Battery Power

A rechargeable motor inside the roller or headrail. No electrician, no wire in the wall, and it can go into a finished house without opening anything up. A charge typically lasts six months or longer — how long depends mostly on how often you run them, and a new set tends to get played with a good deal in the first few weeks, which is half the fun of them. Recharging is a twice-a-year errand, not a chore.

Hardwired Power

Power run to the window and tied into the house. Nothing to recharge, which is why it is the usual choice on a new build or a remodel where the walls are already open. The catch is timing — the wire has to be there before the drywall goes on, so this is a decision you make early or not at all.

Solar Charging

A small solar panel can mount on the back of the shade, facing the glass, and trickle-charge the battery off daylight all day long — out of sight from inside the room. In practice we rarely fit one. The batteries hold a charge well enough that most homes never find the recharging worth engineering around, and we are not going to add a part to your order to solve a problem you do not have. It is worth asking about in one situation: a shade high or awkward enough that getting to it even twice a year is a genuine nuisance. The option exists, on interior shades and exterior ones, and we will tell you honestly whether your windows are a case for it.

Remote & Wall Switch

A handheld remote, a wall-mounted switch, or both — and no hub needed for this part. A single remote can be paired to one shade or to as many as twenty-four, so one button moves a whole room or a whole floor. This is the simplest setup and the one most homes end up using day to day.

Your Phone or Tablet

A small hub joins the shades to your home WiFi, and from there they run from a free app on an iPhone, iPad, or Android — no monthly fee and no account to keep paying for. You can also set schedules, so the shades open with the morning and close against the afternoon sun on a west wall without anyone touching them.

Voice & Smart Home

The lines we carry work with Amazon Alexa, Google Home, and Apple Home, and with the whole-home systems a builder is more likely to spec — Control4, Crestron, Savant, and SmartThings among them. All of it runs through the hub, so tell us at the estimate what you already have and we will match the shades to it rather than the other way round.

Exterior & Patio

Motorization is not only an indoor option. Our exterior sun shades run on a remote, wall switch, or smart-home control instead of a crank, with wind-sensor options that retract the shade automatically in a gust. Solar charging is an option out there too, though the same rule applies: useful on an opening that is a chore to get to, unnecessary on most.

What Can Be Motorized

Battery or wired motorization is available across our shade lines — roller, cellular, zebra, roman — and as a lift option on blinds. If you are weighing a motor on one room and manual elsewhere, that is a perfectly normal way to do it.

Our Process

From estimate to a shade that moves on its own.

1. In-home estimate

We bring samples to your home and look at the actual windows — the heights, the reach, the sun exposure, and whether there is a practical route for power. Control options get decided in the room they will be used in.

2. Measured and powered

Every window is measured on-site, and the power decision gets settled before anything is ordered — battery or hardwired, and where the switch lives. On a new build we will flag what has to happen before the drywall.

3. Installed and set up

Our installer has been in this trade for nearly thirty years. We hang the shades, pair the remotes, group the rooms, and do not leave until you have moved every one of them yourself.

Which One Is Right For You

Motorized vs. cordless vs. a standard lift.

A standard wand or chain is the least expensive and perfectly fine on a window you can reach. A cordless lift already removes the cord, which handles the child-safety question on its own and costs less than a motor — for a lot of homes that is the right stopping point. Motorization is worth the step up when the window is out of reach, when there are enough of them that nobody will work them by hand, or when you want them on a schedule. We will bring all three to the estimate and let you move them yourself before you decide. Pair it with the fabric that fits the room — shades, blinds, blackout shades, or exterior sun shades.

What To Expect

Lead times, power, and new construction.

Motorized shades are built to order around the motor that goes in them — here is what shapes the timeline and the decisions that cannot wait.

Typical Lead Time

Motorized shades are manufactured after we measure, and they generally run longer than a simple roller or light-filtering fabric. We confirm a firm date at your in-home estimate rather than guessing at one now.

New Construction

If you want hardwired motors, the wiring has to be in before the drywall. That makes this one of the few window-covering decisions with a real deadline attached to it. Talk to us while the walls are still open and it costs nothing extra; afterwards, battery is the realistic option.

Where It Pays Off

Stairwell and transom windows, two-story great rooms, media rooms, and any house where the windows outnumber the patience. A west-facing wall is the classic case — that is the sun that drives everyone out of the room at five o’clock, and shades on a schedule close it out before anyone has to get up. Those are the jobs where owners tell us afterwards it was worth it.

Common Questions

Motorized shade questions we hear most.

How much do motorized shades cost?

More than a standard lift, and more than cordless — the motor is a real piece of hardware and it is priced like one. Beyond that it depends on fabric, window size, how many you are doing, and battery versus hardwired. We give you an exact, itemized quote at your free in-home estimate, and we are happy to price a room motorized and the rest manual so you can see the difference side by side.

Battery, solar, or hardwired — which should I pick?

In a finished house, battery, almost always — it goes in without opening a wall, and a charge typically runs six months or more, so it is an errand twice a year rather than a hassle. A solar charger can take even that away, though we rarely find one necessary — worth asking about only if a shade is high or awkward enough that reaching it twice a year is a real nuisance. In a new build or a down-to-studs remodel, hardwired, because the wire is cheap while the walls are open. The decision is mostly about what stage the house is at and which direction the window faces, not which one is better.

Will they work with my phone and my smart home?

Yes — iPhone, iPad, or Android, through a free app with no monthly fee. Voice works with Amazon Alexa, Google Home, and Apple Home, and the lines we carry also tie into Control4, Crestron, Savant, and SmartThings. The one thing to know up front is that app and voice control need a small hub on your WiFi; a plain remote or wall switch does not. We will tell you which pieces your setup actually needs at the estimate instead of selling you a hub you have no use for.

What happens if a motor fails?

You call us. We are a local company with our name on the install, so it is our truck that comes back out — not a support line in another state and not a box you have to ship somewhere. Coverage differs from one product line to the next, so we go through exactly what yours includes at the estimate, once you have picked the one you want. That is the whole reason to buy this from someone in the valley rather than from a website.
